IWAI & J&K Govt Ink MoU to Boost River Cruise Tourism

On March 6, 2025, the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Jammu and Kashmir to enhance river cruise tourism across three National Waterways in the Union Territory.

Under this agreement, IWAI will invest approximately ₹100 crore to develop both waterside and landside infrastructure. This includes the installation of ten floating jetties and the construction of passenger amenities such as waiting halls. Specifically, two jetties will be placed on the Chenab River at Akhnoor and Reasi, seven on the Jhelum River at locations including Pantha Chowk, Zero Bridge, and Amira Kadal, and one on the Ravi River at Sohar.

In addition to infrastructure development, IWAI will undertake dredging operations, provide navigational aids, and conduct regular hydrographic surveys to ensure safe vessel movement. The Jammu and Kashmir government will contribute by providing land for landside facilities, facilitating necessary clearances, and appointing cruise operators for the identified waterways.

This initiative aims to boost tourism, generate employment, and stimulate economic growth in the region by leveraging the potential of its rivers for sustainable tourism.
