Rail Route Enhances Food Grain Logistics to Mizoram

Mizoram achieved a significant milestone in its efforts to strengthen food security with the arrival of the first-ever Food Corporation of India (FCI) food grain train at the newly operational Sairang Railway Station . The train, consisting of 42 wagons, transported approximately 25,900 quintals of rice all the way from Punjab . This historic delivery was received by Mizoram's Food Minister B. Lalchhanzova and Rajya Sabha MP K. Vanlalvena, who is also the FCI Mizoram Consultative Chairman

This successful rail delivery marks a turning point for Mizoram's supply chain. Previously, food grains could only travel by rail as far as Bairabi, near the Assam border, requiring long and often unpredictable road transportation to reach distribution points across the state . The new rail link is expected to streamline the entire process, significantly reducing transit time and cutting transportation costs . The rice from this consignment will be stored at a newly built FCI godown in Sairang, described as the largest facility of its kind in Mizoram, and will be distributed to district godowns in Aizawl, Lunglei, and Lawngtlai.

The arrival of this food grain train was made possible by the inauguration of the 51.38 km Bairabi-Sairang railway line on September 13, 2025, by the Prime Minister . This strategic project has brought Aizawl onto India's railway map for the first time, directly linking the state capital region to the national network . The new line is already proving to be a multi-faceted asset for the region.

Promoting Tourism and Connectivity: The improved connectivity has also given a significant boost to tourism. In February 2026, the first Bharat Gaurav Deluxe AC Tourist Train arrived at Sairang, carrying visitors from across India and countries like the US and Nepal . Passenger train services, including the Sairang-Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express, have seen overwhelming public response with occupancy rates exceeding 150% .

This first rail delivery of food grains is more than just a single shipment; it represents a new era of reliability and efficiency for Mizoram's logistics and food distribution network. By improving the supply chain for essential commodities, this connectivity is playing a vital role in the state's ongoing transformation and development.
