A new life is the greatest blessing! Recognizing the importance of a healthy start, the World Health Organization (WHO) has dedicated World Health Day 2025 to the theme “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures.” This year’s focus is on improving maternal and newborn health, ensuring that every mother and child receives the care they need for a healthy future.
Every two minutes, a mother loses her life due to pregnancy-related complications. Additionally, more than 2.5 million newborns do not survive beyond their first 28 days. These tragic losses often occur due to inadequate medical care, malnutrition, and lack of proper hygiene. Addressing these challenges is crucial in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates worldwide.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Shabnam Raza Akther, Senior Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologistat CARE Hospitals, Malakpet, emphasized, “A mother's health is the foundation of a family and society. Proper prenatal care, safe childbirth, balanced nutrition, and timely medical checkups play a vital role in ensuring a healthy future for both mother and child. Strengthening maternal healthcare is an investment in the well-being of future generations.”
Dr Shabnam Raza Akther advised pregnant women to prioritize regular prenatal check-ups, maintain a nutritious diet rich in iron and essential vitamins, and stay physically active with safe exercises. Proper vaccination is crucial for protecting both mother and baby, and any unusual symptoms like severe pain, swelling, or dizziness should be addressed immediately. Additionally, managing stress and seeking emotional support from family and healthcare professionals can help ensure a healthy pregnancy and smooth postpartum recovery.
To support this cause, CARE Hospitals has initiated establishing world-class neonatal care units, and maternal-infant health camps. Raising awareness and ensuring accessibility to healthcare facilities is essential in reducing preventable complications. Experts urge collaboration between healthcare providers, policymakers, and communities to make quality maternal care available to all.
On this World Health Day, every mother is encouraged to prioritize her health, undergo regular medical checkups, maintain proper nutrition, and ensure the well-being of her newborn. A healthy mother creates a healthier future!
