Keel Laid for Next-Gen Offshore Patrol Vessels

On March 23, 2025, the keel laying ceremony for the second and third Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs), designated as Yard 1281 and Yard 1282, took place at Yeoman Marine Services Private Ltd (YMSPL) in Ratnagiri. These vessels are part of an 11-ship contract finalized on March 30, 2023, between India’s Ministry of Defence and two shipyards: Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE). Under this agreement, GSL is responsible for constructing seven ships, while GRSE will build four.

The NGOPVs, each with an approximate tonnage of 3,000 tons, are designed for various missions, including coastal defense and surveillance, search and rescue operations, protection of offshore assets, and anti-piracy efforts. The fabrication of the main hull blocks for Yard 1281 and Yard 1282 is underway at YMSPL’s facilities in Ratnagiri, aligning with GSL’s construction strategy. The keel laying ceremony was attended by Vice Admiral R Swaminathan, Controller of Warship Production and Acquisition, along with senior officials from the Indian Navy, GSL, and YMSPL.

This milestone underscores India’s commitment to self-reliance in defense manufacturing, resonating with the nation’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives. The introduction of these NGOPVs is poised to enhance the Indian Navy’s maritime capabilities significantly.
