National Jal Jeevan Mission installed 15 crore rural tap connections in just 5 years

The National Jal Jeevan Mission has achieved a historic milestone today, providing tap water to 15 crore rural households across the country. The mission has demonstrated unprecedented speed and scale by increasing rural tap connection coverage from 3 crore in 2019 to 15 crore in a short span of five years. The mission was announced in 2019 with the aim of providing tap water to every rural household by 2024.

In a post, Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil said this achievement has not only given the countrymen the gift of pure water but has also improved their quality of life. As of today, eight states and three union territories have achieved 100 per cent coverage. These include Goa, Telangana, Haryana, Gujarat, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Puducherry, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The 'Har Ghar Jal' initiative is providing significant socio-economic benefits to the rural population, especially women and young girls, by freeing them from the tedious task of fetching water every day. Their saved time is now spent in income generating activities, skill development and supporting children's education.

Jal Jeevan Mission is profoundly transforming the rural landscape through various aspects of rural life. The mission is enhancing the quality of life, ensuring health and well-being, and creating a sense of community empowerment, while also making rural life meaningful and fulfilling.
