The Defense Research and Development Organization conducted two successful flight tests of the Very Short Range Air Defense System (VSHORADS) missile from the Integrated Test Range off the coast of Chandipur in Odisha on 28 and 29 February 2024. Both these tests were conducted with a light and mobile launcher operated from the ground. These were aimed at destroying high-speed unmanned aerial targets under various interception scenarios. Both tests accomplished mission objectives during their flights by intercepting and then destroying targets with missiles.
The Very Short Range Air Defense System missile is a manned manned air defense system (MANPAD) developed by the Research Center Building (RCI) in collaboration with other Defense Research and Development Organization laboratories and Indian industry partners. Indigenously designed and developed. This very short range air defense system missile incorporates several innovative technologies including short response control system (RCS) and integrated avionics, which have proven successful during trials.
Systematic The missile is powered by dual thrust solid motor and is intended to neutralize low altitude airborne threats over limited ranges. The design of the missile including mobile launcher has been highly optimized to ensure easy portability. The flight test was completed in the presence of Indian Army officials, senior scientists from various DRDO laboratories and defense industry partners.
